The Definitive PAC Code Guide: How to Switch Networks & Keep Your Number

Spotted a great SIM-only deal with more data, better coverage or a lower monthly cost—but worried about changing your number? Telling every contact and updating countless accounts is a hassle you don’t need.

Good news: UK rules from Ofcom make keeping your number quick and transparent. ‘Text-to-Switch’ (introduced July 2019) puts you in control—no retention calls, no fuss.

PAC Code: Quick Facts

  • What it is: PAC = Porting Authorisation Code for keeping your number when you switch.
  • How to get it: Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep.
  • Format & validity: 3 letters + 6 numbers (e.g. ABC123456); valid 30 days.
  • Cost: Free to issue.
  • Timing: Give your PAC to the new provider by 5pm Mon–Fri for a next working-day transfer.
Tap to text ‘PAC’ to 65075

Opens your SMS app and pre-fills "PAC" to 65075 (mobile only).

Your Simple 3-Step Guide to Switching Your Number

Switching your number now boils down to three straightforward steps.

💬 Step 1: Get Your PAC Code (The 60-Second Method)

The easiest way is the universal Text-to-Switch service.

To get your PAC code, text the word PAC to 65075.

You’ll receive an automated reply with your 9-character PAC code, any early termination or handset charges, and any remaining pay-as-you-go credit.

Other Ways to Get Your PAC (If You Can’t Text)

  • Call your provider and request it over the phone (they should provide it immediately where possible, or follow up by text).
  • You can request a PAC via your online account or by the network's app. They must supply it through these routes too.

🛒 Step 2: Choose Your New Plan and Provide Your PAC

First, use our SIM-only comparison to find the cheapest deal. If you’re after a handset, jump straight into Apple iPhone deals or Samsung Galaxy deals as a starting point. Then you have 2 options for providing the PAC:

  • At checkout: Enter your PAC during sign-up when prompted.
  • After you join: If you don’t have it to hand, add the PAC later in your new account/app once your SIM or eSIM is active.

Pro tip: Check coverage for where you live, work and commute using the official Ofcom coverage map.

⏳ Step 3: Sit Back and Let the Switch Happen

After you supply the PAC, your new provider handles the transfer.

Cut-off times: For a next working-day port, your new provider must receive the PAC before 5pm Mon–Fri. After 5pm or at weekends (and bank holidays), it rolls to the following working days.

On the Day of the Switch

  1. Keep using your old SIM until it shows ‘No Service’.
  2. Power off, insert your new SIM (or activate your eSIM), power on.
  3. Your old number should now be active on the new network.

PAC Code Alternatives: STAC and INFO

The Text-to-Switch system offers two other keywords for different scenarios. Using the right one is crucial.

STAC and INFO codes
Your Goal What to Text What It Does
Get a new number Text STAC to 75075 Generates a Service Termination Authorisation Code. Ends your old contract and number when processed by your new provider.
Just check my contract Text INFO to 85075 Returns contract end date and any exit/handset fees. Does not create a switching code or start a switch.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid When Switching

  • Calling to cancel your old contract. Don’t - using a PAC triggers the cancellation correctly.
  • Forgetting to save voicemails. Voicemail doesn’t transfer.
  • Not checking if your phone is unlocked. Older devices may be locked to the old network.
  • Submitting your PAC late on Friday. After 5pm Friday often means completion on Tuesday.

Three Common PAC Myths

  1. “Requesting a PAC cancels my service.” False - it only ends when your new provider uses the PAC.
  2. “I’ll be charged a notice period after I switch.” No - providers can’t double-charge notice days once you’ve ported.
  3. “I can’t keep my number if I already cancelled.” You can ask to keep it within one month of cancellation.

Your Rights Under Ofcom’s Rules

  • Request methods: Text 65075, online account/app, or by phone.
  • Delivery speed: By phone, providers should give the PAC immediately (or by SMS within 2 hours if not possible); text/online within 2 working days.
  • No fees: Providers cannot charge for issuing a PAC.
  • Port timing: PAC received before 5pm on a weekday → next working-day switch.
  • Multiple numbers: For 2–24 numbers, request PACs online or by phone; by phone they should be given immediately where possible (or by SMS within two hours), and online within two working days. For 24+ numbers, your provider will outline the process for bulk switching.
  • Delays & compensation: If your switch is delayed beyond expected timeframes, you may be due reasonable compensation.
  • No double-charging: Providers can’t charge notice-period days after your switch date.
  • After cancellation: You can still ask to keep your old number within one month of cancelling.

Your PAC Code Questions, Answered

Can I switch the same day?

Ports usually complete the next working day after your new provider receives a valid PAC before 5pm. Same-day switching isn’t guaranteed.

How do I get a PAC if I can’t text or have no signal?

Request it in your online account or by phone with your current provider. By phone it should be given immediately where possible (or by SMS within two hours); online requests should be supplied within two working days.

How do I get a PAC code?

Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep. You can also request it in your provider account/app or by phone.

Can I get a PAC while I’m still in contract?

Yes. Getting a PAC is free, but if you leave early your final bill may include early termination or remaining device payments.

When will my number move to the new network?

If the new provider receives your PAC before 5pm Mon–Fri, the port should complete the next working day. Later/weekend submissions roll to the following working days.

I cancelled already - can I still keep my old number?

Yes. You can still request to keep your number within one month of cancelling with your old provider.

Does requesting a PAC cancel my contract?

No. Your old service ends only when your new provider uses the PAC and completes the switch.

How long is a PAC code valid?

30 days. If it expires before you use it, request a new one.

Do I have to pay to get a PAC?

No. Issuing a PAC is free. If you’re still in contract, your final bill may include early termination or handset charges.

I’m abroad - can I still switch with a PAC?

You can request a PAC from abroad, but some networks complete the port only when your phone reconnects to a UK network.

My provider asked for my date of birth with the PAC text - is this normal?

Yes, some networks require DOB in the SMS for security (e.g., send PACDDMMYY to 65075).

Can I use a PAC for multiple numbers on a family/business account?

Usually you’ll request and use separate PACs for each number, often via the online account or by phone if text isn’t supported.

Will a PAC move my texts, voicemail or PAYG credit?

No. A PAC only ports your number. Voicemail and PAYG credit don’t transfer, so save messages and use remaining credit first.

What if my switch is delayed or goes wrong?

Contact your new provider to investigate. Ports taking longer than expected should be resolved promptly; you may be due compensation depending on the circumstances.

eSIM: anything different when switching?

The PAC process is the same. After the port, install/activate the new eSIM profile and re-toggle iMessage/FaceTime/WhatsApp if needed.

Why did my PAC get rejected?

Common causes include an expired PAC, submitting after 5pm/weekend (date rolled), account type mismatch, a locked device, or a new SIM/eSIM not yet activated. Request a fresh PAC and retry.
