Overview
iPhone 16 is Apple’s mainstream model. It keeps the familiar 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR design with Dynamic Island, Face ID, USB-C and MagSafe, and continues with a dual rear camera system: a 48MP main wide lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. On the front, there’s a 12MP TrueDepth camera for selfies and video calls. The real upgrades come in new controls, faster performance and added AI features.
New this year are two physical controls. Camera Control is a dedicated capture button: press to launch Camera, and use it to quickly adjust zoom, exposure and depth or switch lenses. The Action button replaces the old mute switch and can be set to launch common tools. Popular options include Camera, Flashlight or a Shortcut.
Inside, it moves to the A18 chip (iPhone 15 used A16 Bionic). Apple says A18 delivers up to 30% faster CPU and up to 40% faster GPU versus A16, with better efficiency. Battery rating rises to up to 22 hours of video playback (iPhone 15 was up to 20 hours). For connectivity you get 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.
It’s also compatible with Apple Intelligence’s on-device features, including an upgraded Siri, system-wide Writing Tools (rewrite and summarize), Image Playground, Genmoji, and visual intelligence. These aren’t available on the standard iPhone 15. If you’re interested in Apple’s AI tools, that’s the most noticeable year-over-year upgrade.
